Fifty Shades of Grey: A Brief History

The erotic fiction novel was written by E.L. James, who first crafted the story as a Twilight fan fiction piece called Master of the Universe. Her fan fiction became popular online and E.L James then decided to change the names of the main characters to Ana Steele and Christian Grey, rewrote the story a little, split the Masters of the Universe into three parts and the once fan fiction became a full blown novel series called Fifty Shades of Grey.

Why did it become so Popular?

As of today, the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy had outsold the hugely successful Hunger Games trilogy, and it has become the number one book on bestseller lists around the world, including the New York Times. The book, although popular among many worldwide, has not go without controversy. Some thought that the novel, which contained BDSM, was too explicit and did not convey a positive message about relationships to women. The book involves the tumultuous liaison between a Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, in which he has her sign a contract giving him full control and dominance over her sexually.  The controversy surrounding the book’s explicit content caused the book to be banned in numerous libraries, such as in Florida and Wisconsin, USA.

The controversy, however, didn’t stop the book from flying off the shelves. The reasons for the its success have been hugely debated. Many people argue that women have always enjoyed romance and erotica novels for escapism, but in the past had found it a little embarrassing to purchase an erotic novel over the counter. Nowadays, with a variety of e-readers and online bookstores available, we can all purchase anything we want more discreetly. Some have argued that this has attributed to the books amazing success.

After reading the first book, Fifty Shades of Grey, many people said that they couldn’t wait to read the next two books Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. The book’s success has continued with more and more people discovering the trilogy, and most recently, the author signed a contract for Fifty Shades of Grey to be adapted into a film.
